He wrote, “I don’t have a beard because I’m in the US Navy, a Chief Petty Officer, and the uniform regulations permit a mustache as the only facial allowed.” I’m glad Donovan sent this in, because guys with mustaches write in asking if they would be included because it is a “Beard” Token, but when Peter the Great enforced the Beard Tax, it was levied on all styles of facial hair, including mustaches. If you rocked a mustache in 1705 Russia, you had to carry a Beard Token, otherwise you risked some official shaving it with a dull razor, or in some instances plucking it out one hair at a time, at least according to folklore.
