Flower of Life or thunder marks such as these were often engraved upon roof beams of houses to protect them from lightning bolts. Identical symbols were discovered on Proto-Slavic pottery of 4th century Chernyakhov culture. The wooden beam ceiling in the old room (1681) from Sanok area, with rosette form of “flower of Life” geometric pattern. Skansen in Sanok, Poland. (via)

Old Trees

northdevoninery:

Rather fantastic article on wired detailing some of the oldest trees on the planet. This is called Jomon Sugi and could be as old as 7000 years

old tree

In certain altered states I’ve been known, on occasion, to tree hug, and there are other times when you could just hang my body in one, jaw hanging to the ground, eyes wide.

I’d make a pilgrimage to this tree.

pottsvillain:

Finally finished and assembled my work bench.  The ammonia fuming didn’t get the oak as dark as I expected, but it definitely highlighted the grain pattern.  Finished with Linseed Oil, then a Boiled Linseed Oil, Turpentine and Bee’s Wax mix.

This is the biggest woodworking project I’ve ever done.  The only purchased part was the quick release face vise.  I made everything else.  I’m pretty happy with it.  Now to figure out the next project, maybe something smaller…

Here is a nice workbench.

Here is a nice workbench.

“Every piece of lumber has three kinds of surfaces: edges, faces and ends. A good workbench should be able to hold your lumber so you can easily work on these three kinds of surfaces. Any bench that falls short of this basic requirement will hold you back as your woodworking skills advance.”  (LostArtPress)

Hungarian Istvan Puskas, a 52-year-old tractor driver, built his bike in two years from firewood.

Love the barrel gas tank and the custom antler work on the rear hub.  This guy with his helmet is an overall badass.

Beard Token

About

In 1705, Emperor Peter I of Russia instituted a beard tax. Those who paid the tax were required to carry a "beard token".

This site celebrates and explores the bearded aesthetic everywhere. It's 2 parts whiskey to 3 parts testosterone mixed in a two-stroke engine and served in a goat horn. So follow if you're adventurous.
